That Nagging Headache Could be coming from your Neck

In an increasingly busy and tech focused world, headaches are something that people often think they need to live with. While there may be a specific medical diagnosis that can account for the presence of a headache, sometimes the neck is the culprit.

What causes neck related headaches?

The cervical spine, also known as your neck, can contribute to a headache when it becomes irritated. This phenomenon is known as “referred pain”. In this case the headache is known as a cervico-genic headache.

What causes this to happen?

There are a number of factors which contribute to a cervico-genic headache. Poor postural habits and increased smartphone use are common contributors in our increasingly tech centred life.

What can physiotherapy do to help this?

There are a number of hands on techniques which may help give you relief from your headache if the cervical spine is playing a major part in the development and/or maintenance of your symptoms. Once your symptoms have settled, a graded home exercise program encouraging postural awareness and normal neck and head mobility may help to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Do I need a medical referral?

You do not need a medical referral to see a physiotherapist. However if you have a severe headache you need to see a doctor to rule out other causes.
