What is the GLA:D program

Good Life with osteoArthitis in Denmark (GLA:D) is an exercise and education program for treatment of knee and hip osteoarthritis. GLA:D includes patient education and a neuromuscular exercise program conducted twice a week for six weeks.

The GLA:D program is currently being implemented in Australia and we offer this program with our certified GLA:D Australia physiotherapists (with or without a referral from another health professional).

What is involved in the GLA:D program?

Put simply, the program involves both strengthening and learning. Understanding osteoarthritis on a deeper level, learning how to move better and getting stronger has been scientifically proven to improve pain and functioning.

The education component consists of two 60-minute lectures. The exercise program includes 6 weeks (twice a week) of supervised neuromuscular exercise (NEMEX) for approximately 45 – minutes in a small group.

Osteoarthritis is often described as a “wear and tear disease “. This description should be avoided since it leads many people to think that they cannot and should not be physically active. This is incorrect. In fact, cartilage needs moderate load through physical activity to regenerate itself! Who knew?
