What is the GLA:D program

Good Life with osteoArthitis in Denmark (GLA:D) is an exercise and education program for treatment of knee and hip osteoarthritis. GLA:D includes patient education and a neuromuscular exercise program conducted twice a week for six weeks.

The GLA:D program is currently being implemented in Australia and we offer this program with our certified GLA:D Australia physiotherapists (with or without a referral from another health professional).

What is involved in the GLA:D program?

Put simply, the program involves both strengthening and learning. Understanding osteoarthritis on a deeper level, learning how to move better and getting stronger has been scientifically proven to improve pain and functioning.

The education component consists of two 60-minute lectures. The exercise program includes 6 weeks (twice a week) of supervised neuromuscular exercise (NEMEX) for approximately 45 – minutes in a small group.

To Begin

To begin your GLA:D program, simply schedule a GLA:D Assessment with one of our GLA:D certified Physiotherapists by calling (03) 9836 7000 or booking online.

A 45-minute consultation is required, involving a clinical examination, discussion of your symptoms, identifying any risks factors and ensuring you fully understand the journey you are about to undertake.

What happens next?

Following your assessment, we will book you in for a private session to begin teaching you a tailored program of GLA:D neuromuscular exercises (NEMEX) .

After your private session you will then join a group class twice a week for 6 weeks and you are on your way to moving better, feeling better and less joint pain.

About the group classes

The group classes have a maximum of 4- 6 people in it to ensure that everyone’s programs are specifically tailored to their individual needs. It allows for close supervision to help you achieve your best results.

Education Lectures

You will also need attend two education lectures, each approximately 60 minutes long conducted by our GLA:D Certified Physiotherapist. The education sessions should be attended within the first few weeks of the GLA:D program and are considered to be a vital part of the GLA:D program.

Osteoarthritis is often described as a “wear and tear disease “. This description should be avoided since it leads many people to think that they cannot and should not be physically active. This is incorrect. In fact, cartilage needs moderate load through physical activity to regenerate itself! Who knew?
