Sick of Heel Pain Controlling Your Life? Here is an approach that works!

Sick of Heel Pain Controlling Your Life? Here is an approach that works!

Does Every Step Feel Like You’re Walking on Broken Glass?

If the first steps out of bed are excruciating…

If standing at work or walking the dog ends in frustration…

If you’ve tried stretching, inserts, or resting — and nothing has worked… welcome to the nasty reality of dealing with heel pain…. but there IS hope.

Chances are you are experiencing Plantar Fasciitis – or as modern clinicians call it, plantar heel pain (PHP). Plantar fasciitis is now known to not be really about inflammation – hence we are dropping the “itis” part in the wording.

In fact, multiple papers have already shown the pathology is less inflammatory than first thought, but rather from a breakdown of the fascia from “repetitive overload”. We also know that another long-held belief that the pain was from a heel spur, that this also is false in 95% of cases! So, what is really going on in your heel?

Read on below to dive deep into the science and the solutions.

Why Plantar Fasciitis Lingers (Even With “Good” Advice)

It’s common to feel like you’ve tried everything — rest, new shoes, the latest Google stretches — but the pain still comes back. Why?

That’s because most approaches treat the symptom, not the cause.

At Balwyn Sports & Physio Centre, we follow the latest 2023 Clinical Practice Guidelines using a step-by-step system that’s personalised to your exact needs.

Our 8-Step Plantar Fasciitis Treatment System

*(Based on high level scientific Evidence – Martin et al., 2023) *

Step 1: Expert Diagnosis

Heel pain can have many causes. It is crucial that we rule out:

  • Fat pad irritation
  • Baxter’s nerve entrapment
  • S1 nerve referral
  • Tarsal tunnel syndrome
  • Calcaneal stress fracture

These are all different diagnoses and also can present as heel pain.

We also assess each of the known contributing factors, including:

  • Foot posture
  • Ankle dorsiflexion
  • Calf flexibility & strength
  • Trigger points
  • Gait and standing control

Step 2: Proven pain relief techniques…FAST

Low-Dye taping or supportive kinesiology tape can:

  • Reduce pain quickly
  • Support your arch
  • Make walking and standing more comfortable

Taping is most effective in the first 1–3 weeks alongside exercise.

Step 3: Stretching

We prescribe two key stretches backed by evidence:

  • Plantar Fascia Stretch
  • Calf Stretch

These target the structures that become overloaded in plantar heel pain and can dramatically reduce morning pain.

Step 4: Strengthening

Strength is a game-changer for long-term recovery. We target:

  • Foot intrinsics – the arch muscles
  • Toe flexors – these have been shown to be weak in plantar heel pain
  • Calf complex – with isometric holds

Step 5: Dry Needling

If you’ve got persistent tightness in the calves or plantar fascia, dry needling can:

  • Release muscle trigger points
  • Reduce pain
  • Complement other treatments like exercise and manual therapy

Step 6: Manual Therapy

Hands-on therapy isn’t just about “loosening things up.” Not all therapists are created equal here and it is critical you choose a therapist that has advanced “hands-on” skill.

Manual Therapy helps:

  • Improve ankle dorsiflexion
  • Release restricted joints
  • Reduce local plantar fascia tenderness

We use:

  • Advanced Joint mobilisations and manipulations
  • Soft tissue massage
  • Trigger point release in calves and foot muscle

Step 7: Night Splints

Still waking up with sharp, stabbing pain in the heel?

Night splints hold your foot in a gentle stretch while you sleep, and are proven to:

  • Reduce early morning pain
  • Improve long-term comfort for chronic sufferers

Step 8: Load Management, Education & Activity Advice

You don’t need to stop exercising — just modify how you do it.

We coach you on:

  • Workload progression
  • Avoiding pain spikes
  • Training around your pain while healing occurs

Real Treatment. Real Results.
