Concussion Assessments at BSPC

Don’t let a knock to the head become a long-term problem. Our expert team is here to guide your safe recovery.

Why Concussion Assessments Matter

Concussions are more than “just a bump to the head.” They are brain injuries that can impact your cognitive, physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. Whether from sport, a fall, or another injury, proper assessment and care are essential to ensure a safe return to work, school, or play.

Delaying or avoiding assessment can lead to prolonged symptoms and poor recovery. At BSPC, we specialise in concussion care — helping you understand your symptoms and guiding you through each step of your recovery.

When You Need a Concussion Assessment

You should book a concussion assessment if you or your child experiences:

  • A head knock or whiplash injury (sports or non-sport related)
  • Symptoms like headache, dizziness, memory issues, fogginess, nausea or balance problems
  • Behavioural changes such as irritability or fatigue
  • Worsening symptoms with physical or cognitive effort

Even if symptoms seem mild, a comprehensive assessment ensures there are no underlying concerns and sets the foundation for safe recovery.

Who Should Be Assessed

Our concussion assessments are suitable for:

  • Athletes of all ages and levels (including return-to-sport clearance)
  • Children and adolescents with growing brains that need extra care
  • Adults with workplace injuries, falls, or accidents
  • Anyone with ongoing symptoms following a previous concussion

What’s Involved in a BSPC Concussion Assessment

Your assessment is conducted by a specially trained physiotherapist or osteopath, and includes:

Initial Assessment (60 minutes)

  • In-depth medical and symptom history
  • Neurological and vestibular screening
  • SCAT-6 testing (excluding Maddocks 5)
  • Balance and gait testing (Modified BESS, Tandem gait)
  • Vision and eye-tracking tests (King-Devick, VOMS)
  • Cervical spine assessment and range of motion
  • Education on concussion physiology and recovery phases
  • Tailored home exercise and pacing program

Follow-Up Sessions (30–45 minutes)

  • Progress monitoring and symptom tracking
  • Treadmill testing (Day 5–7) to assess exercise tolerance
  • Gradual rehabilitation progression (Day 12–14)
  • Final clearance testing (Day 19–21) for safe return to sport or school
  • Adjustments for persistent symptoms if needed

Comprehensive Return to Sport (RTS) Planning
